Nugget of Knowledge: Google’s auto complete feature

Daybreak

How does Google know how to finish my sentence?

Ever start typing that in, and Google finishes it.

Here’s what we learned:

Google has been offering suggestions or Google Autocomplete since 2008. It started experimenting with it in 2004.

The suggestions that Google offers all come from how people actually search.

If you type in the word “coupons,” Google searches for popular places people have used coupons, say, Bob Evans or Olive Garden.

You see, Google never forgets. It remembers your own search history and adds its suggestions. You may have asked Google about Bob Evans coupons before.

A lot of it depends on your location. If you type in “tickets for,” one of the top searches might finish tickets for Cedar Point or Cleveland Indians.

If you don’t care for this feature, there are steps you can take to disable it.
