Len Rome’s Local Health: Artificial Sweeteners

Daybreak

Are you doing yourself a favor by swapping real sugar for artificial sweeteners?

New research says not really.

You may want to think twice before using artificial sweeteners to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The chemical sweetener, sucralose, may do more harm than good to your body.

Dr. Mark Hyman, of the Cleveland Clinic, said the sweeteners may be calorie-free, but it has severe adverse metabolic effects.

It increases insulin levels, oxidative stress or free radicals and even the uptake of glucose into the cells. All of these things lead to pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and weight gain.

Another study shows artificial sweeteners can change the bacteria that live in our gut, leading to inflammation and obesity.

Artificial sweeteners often show up in processed foods.
