YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – This year may be a banner year for recalls.

Vehicle recalls shot through the roof in 2014. The year as a whole is being called the Year of the Recall, more than doubling the amount of recalls from a decade ago with nearly 64 million vehicles last year.

The total number of recalls shattered the previous record of 684 set in 2008 with 803.

General Motors contributed 27 million vehicles to the number. At least 12 million of those came from faulty airbags made by Takata, the most recalled auto part of the year.

With all of these recall notices, car buyers are thinking twice when considering purchasing a new car, but many of the cars recalled in 2014 were older models such as the GM recall of 1997 to 2008 model sedans, which was among the largest in 2014 with almost 6 million vehicles.
