Angels for Animals fixing cats for $15

It's part of Feline Fix Fest, which runs through March 1

CANFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – Angels for Animals is offering an accessible way to fix your cat on Saturday.

The cost is $15 during “Feline Fix Fest” at the shelter in Canfield. The goal is to fix 1,000 cats.

Angels for Animals has seen a record number of cats and kittens brought to the shelter this year. Feline Fix Fest is a way to help get the overpopulation of cats under control.

“Two cats, ten years, 80 million,” said Angels for Animals owner Diane Less, referring to how quickly cats can populate.

She explains how this year, Angels for Animals saw an almost 50 percent increase in cat drop-offs. In 2019, 3,800 cats were left at the shelter and Less says it was financially devastating for them.

So, to try and lower that number this year, Angels for Animals is offering professional spay and neuters by appointment for $15. Any cat is welcomed for that price.

Feline Fix Fest runs through March 1.

“It’s about the lives and about the heartbreak dealing with all these stray animals. It is heartbreaking to watch 30 or 40 cats come into our shelter in one day,” said Less.

Amber Padula is the head veterinary technician at Angels for Animals. She explains how the mild weather recently means more cats are out and at risk of mating.

She believes that’s why the shelter received 427 cat surrenders last June.

By tackling the issue in the beginning of the year, they hope to see fewer drop-offs.

“I know the goal is 1,000 cats, so hopefully we get that many or more done in the next few months,” Padula said.

Less also explained how this issue is nationwide and even more severe in more heavily populated areas.

She says with 500 cats already scheduled, this program could save hundred of thousands of cats in the long run.

To make an appointment call 330-549-5634.

You can also sponsor a cat for $45 by calling 330-502-5352. Those who sponsor five cats get a t-shirt.

All cats are required to have their rabies vaccinations.

Angels for Animals also fixes trapped and pregnant cats, Monday through Friday. Drop-off is from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and drop offs are limited to two cats a day. No appointment is needed.

Angels for Animals is located at 4750 W. South Range Road in Canfield.
