Woman at center of Warren police brutality case dies

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WYTV) - The woman who was at the center of a federal lawsuit surrounding the Warren Police Department has died.

Heidi Gill was found dead this week. The circumstances of her death have not been released. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The video of Warren police officer Richard Kovach using a Taser on Gill in 2007 triggered an investigation into the Warren Police Department and garnered national attention and a federal lawsuit.

The lawsuit was settled for over $300,000.

Gill was arrested in September 2007 outside the Up A Creek Tavern on East Market St. where she was combative with officers. Kovachs used his Taser on her several times, which was recorded on video.

Gill was interviewed on several national media outlets about the case.

Kovach was later fired on an unrelated case but won his job back through arbitration.
