YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – If you want to know what is in the food you’re eating, you check the food label. Food labels, however, are going to change.

After 20 years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved new labels for foods. The changes will go into effect in 2018, but most companies have already started implementing it.

Some of the changes to food labels are cosmetic, such as the the size of the font, serving size and especially calories. Calories will be in bold and stick out, making it easier to see.

The FDA has also eliminated calories from the fat. This is because public perception was that you should avoid eating fat, causing people to miss out on the good fats that they need.

What other changes did the FDA make? How impactful will these changes be on general public health?

Dr. Shayesteh joined 33 WYTV Daybreak to explain the changes and what to look out for on the new food labels.
