This week’s 33 WYTV Hometown Hero is a woman who takes pride in her city.
From helping with Streetscape to handing out coffee at a local hospital, Rebecca Banks stays busy year round volunteering wherever she can.
Rebecca was born and raised in Youngstown. She is proud of the city she calls home and does all she can to help. She volunteers at Mercy Health, mentors children through United Way and tutors students at Youngstown State University.
The path Rebecca has taken at YSU, as both a student and a tutor, has allowed her to influence the students she works with.
“I just love the young. They give us energy. They have love, compassion and good ideas. I want to help them,” Rebecca said. “They are loved and valued. I want to hear what they have to say. I care about their thoughts and their feelings.”
Another volunteer opportunity she uses to help the community is through her radio show, “Love and Music.” On the air she goes by the name Lady Love. She invites people young and old to be guests on her show. They come from all walks of life, and many are also volunteers who work to better the community.
“It allows me to promote the good and shoe the good. I just love that fact. It is a treasure to me,” Rebecca said.
One of her biggest ways she gets people excited about Youngstown is through her radio show.
Rookery Radio volunteer Marisa Woolensack nominated Rebecca for 33 WYTV’s Hometown Hero series. She has been tutored by Rebecca over the years and volunteered beside her. She said Rebecca inspired her in many ways, especially when it comes to volunteering and getting involved.
Rebecca said she is humbled and honored that people see that she is making a difference in her community.
