Hometown Hero hires veterans to get them back on their feet

Hometown Heroes

Retired Navy veteran George McDonnell helps his fellow vets transition back to civilian life or get back on their feet if they’ve had a rough time. He does this through a business centered around something all veterans are familiar with.

George served 21 years in the U.S. Navy. After retiring, he wanted to help other veterans by utilizing a basic skill all veterans learn early on in their military careers.

“All veterans know how to clean from day one of boot camp. We all not only learned how to clean, but clean really, really well,” he said. “We’re all detail-oriented and that’s what makes us special. Not only are we creating jobs for veterans, but we’re giving them something that they know how to do and do really, really well.”

George is the president of Teamvets Cleaning Service — a company that provides custodial work to local businesses throughout the Mahoning Valley and Northeast Ohio.

He only employs veterans and their families.

George said the Valley is a very veteran-friendly area and he’s glad to be a part of that.

“It’s just amazing because we do have a lot of resources here but there are still veterans that need work, whether they’re coming back from the war and are trying to get themselves transitioned into civilian life or maybe they’ve fallen upon hard times.”

In addition to helping vets with employment, George is also a mentor for those going through the Veteran Honor Court. It’s a program run by Judge Anthony D’Apolito for veterans who commit a one-time non-violent felony.

“When they go into court, they sign a guilty plea. The judge holds onto it. They’ve got a 12-month program consisting of four phases where they have to meet certain milestones and certain criteria, and if they do that successfully, they graduate from the program and they have a clean record,” George said.

Whether it’s helping vets get through the Honor Court program or getting them jobs with Teamvets Cleaning Service, George is honored to do whatever he can to help them get back on their feet.

“Sometimes people need a helping hand and that’s what I’m here to do,” he said.
