Student Athlete: Phil Bell

Columbiana, OH (WYTV) - When it comes to student athletes, it's hard to find one more involved than Heartland Christian's Phil Bell. He's racked up 10 varsity letters in four different sports with the Lions, while leading his class with a 4.0 GPA and serving as Class President.

"I like to be easy going a lot of the time, I like to just show leadership just by like staying focused," said Bell. "I like to just go a hundred percent in everything I do and do it all for God."

Phil Bell is not your average Student Athlete. He's a leader on and off the playing field at Heartland Christian, where he's started as a shortstop and pitcher the last four years.

"I like to pitch a lot...a lot of people get nervous under that type of pressure," he said. "God blessed me with the ability to just stay calm, and to focus whenever there's a lot of pressure."

And Phil has dealt with that pressure well. He's thrown 43 strikeouts this season, helping lead Heartland to a 12-8 record. But his academics have always come first.

"Staying busy has really taught me to just kind of balance what I'm doing," said Bell. "To find time for sports and find time to do my homework, because that's really what's more important than sports."

Phil has done it all while at Heartland...he's Treasurer of Student Council, a part of National Honor's Society and even an Eagle Scout. He's also been on three different mission trips, to Guatemala and recently to St. Jude's Hospital.

"I've been blessed so much by God, so it's really good to be able to give back," said Bell. "All these opportunities, it's really what i enjoy. I have a passion for serving others."

Phil plans to use that passion in the medical field one day, but first he'll attend Grove City College next year, and play baseball for the Wolverines.

"It's been a lot of fun these four years of high school, getting to know different students, talking to them," he said. "My classmates are all a ton of fun to hang out with but I'm excited to see what God has next, what He has planned for the future."
