Student Athlete of the Week--Steve Gruver

Our student athlete of the week is one of the top pitchers in the state and may soon have to decide on whether to turn pro or play college baseball. Bill Castrovince tells us is work in the classroom may even be more impressive than what he does on the mound.

His fastball has him on the fast track to success .. Fitch senior Steve Gruver can reach the low 90's on the radar gun, and scouts from the Reds, Mariners, Phillies, and Pirates have their eye on him.

"Just knowing the draft is in a month, I don't know how good a possibility there is of me going high in the draft. Just having that possibility is pretty exciting."--Steve Gruver

Gruver is a four year starter, with 14 victories and counting .. One year after suffering a partial tear in his rotator cuff, he is averaging about 10 strikeouts a game - earning a scholarship to the University of Tennessee.

"When I went to Tennessee, I loved the campus and loved the coaches. I know the pitching coach is amazing. I know he can help me a lot in the next few years."--Steve Gruver

Regardless of what happens with his baseball career, Steve is going to be a success. He is a straight A student who is going to graduate as a class valedictorian."

"That last year, getting hurt, made me realize at any point in time, no matter how good you are doing, you could always get hurt and that would be the end of your career. So you always have to have that backup with academics and grades."--Steve Gruver

For his K's on the diamond, and A's in the classroom, Steve Gruver of Fitch is our Student Athlete of the WEEK.
