They made a name for themselves on Friday nights, right here in the Mahoning Valley. Now, they will play on Sundays.
Five players with local ties became NFL employees during the 2008 NFL Draft.
Boardman native John Greco was the first to hear his named called on Sunday, and it was an early call. The St. Louis Rams drafted Greco with the second pick in the third round, #65 overall. At 6'5'', 320 pounds, Greco will compete for the starting right tackle job right away. The former Spartan standout made 49 consecutive starts over four years on Toledo's offensive line. He was named First Team All MAC three times.
Antwaun Molden played for Warren Harding for three seasons before tranferring to Cleveland Glenville high school. After a stop in Toledo, he finished his collegiate career at Eastern Kentucky. Now, he is a member of the Houston Texans. Molden was drafted in the third round with the 79th selection after a terrific showing at the NFL Combine.
Warren's Mario Manningham was the next local player taken in the draft, and it was the defending Super Bowl Champions who made the pick. Super Mario is headed for the New York Giants after going in the third round, #95 overall. Manningham finished fifth on Michigan's all time receiving list with 2,310 yards in three seasons, while scoring 27 touchdowns. Off field issues and a slow time in the 40 yard dash at the combine hurt his stock, but the Giants are convinced they got a steal in the former Harding standout.
Former Fitch lineman Mike McGlynn is headed for the City of Brotherly Love. The Eagles drafted McGlynn in the 4th round on Sunday with the 109th pick. At 6'5'', 318 pounds, the Austintown product started 47 games at tackle and guard for the Pitt Panthers, but is expected to play on the interior line for Philly.
Keilen Dykes is on his way to the desert. The Chaney grad and former West Virginia Mountaineer has signed a free agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Dykes started all four years in Morgantown, earning First Team All Big East honors his last two seasons while starting 44 games. He will compete for a spot on the Cardinals defensive line.
