Millions of people around the globe celebrate Easter, each with their own customs

Polish Easter is known for the beautiful eggs, and of course, food!

The culture and tradition will be shared this weekend at St. Stanislaus Church in Youngstown. The Polish Folk Circle is having traditional workshops as part of its celebration.

"Polish Easter is wrapped around a lot of symbolism," said Marta Mazur of the Krakowiaki Polish Folk Circle. "There's a lot of symbolism where we take the Easter basket to church on Saturday and we bless all the items that will be present at our Easter table on Sunday. We share egg with everybody, hard boiled egg, which is cut up and we share it and we wish everyone good luck."

The Polish Easter event is this Sunday from noon until 4:00 p.m. at Saint Stan's in Youngstown.

Aqua Ohio Water is trying to increase the water rates of its customers in the Masury and Brookfield area by 81 percent, and on Thursday night a special hearing was put together by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio so the consumers could speak their minds.

Residents gathered at the Brookfield Township Administration building to get more information. Right now, their monthly bills are $19, and the increase would take that up to nearly $35. Many of the residents believe the increase is absolutely ridiculous, especially in these hard economic times.

"The increase is just out of this world," said Masury resident Cindy Harakal. "To actually double your water bill that you pay now, and I know for me I also have a separate sewer bill."

In August 2009, Aqua Ohio filed an application with PUCO to increase the rates for customers in its Masury and Brookfield division. Under Ohio law, a public utility is entitled to recover from its customers the expenses associated with operating the utility, plus a reasonable return on infrastructure investments.

But the Ohio Consumers' Council believes the increase should not negatively impact consumers in such a large manner.

"This is about an 80 percent proposed increase. We feel that it should be spread out," said Christopher Verich, from the Ohio Consumers' Council. "If there is an increase, it should be spread out over a much longer time so it wouldn't overwhelm the customer in these hard economic times."

The customers' feedback will play a big role in PUCO deciding whether or not to grant Aqua Ohio its proposed increase.

"Even the residents who aren't able to make it to this hearing can always file a letter with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio about this case," said Verich.

PUCO will now look at all of the evidence from Thursday night's hearing and should have a final decision in several months.

Could there be a new purpose for a house near the YSU campus that was saved from the wrecking ball?

At one time, the old house was a local dentist's office. It was actually moved down Lincoln Avenue to make way for the College of Education.

Now, the University is looking to see if the old house could be converted for use by students in the Criminal Justice program, but a lot of work would have to be done first.

"From what I understand, there's no electricity to the house," said University spokesperson Ron Cole. "I don't think there's any plumbing. I'm not really sure, but there would have to be significant work to the house to be able to use it in any way."

Cole adds discussions about the house are in the very preliminary stages, and it's too soon to tell what it would be used for in the future.

One of the last remaining symbols of Youngstown's steel making heritage will soon be torn down.

On Thursday night, Youngstown City Council approved the funding to demolish the old Sheet & Tube office building adjacent to the former Brier Hill Works, or what is now V&M Star.

About $361,000 is coming in the form of a grant from the Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund.

The building will be cleared away to improve the overall look of the area ahead of V&M's $650,000,000 expansion project.

"We had always wanted to tear it down," said Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams. "But it became accelerated with the announcement of V&M. So we were working on it as a part of the deal even before V&M made that final decision, because it's just important to clean up that corridor, the 422, Martin Luther King corridor."

Mayor Williams said the demolition will start as soon as all the asbestos is removed from the building. The wrecking ball could swing sometime this summer.

An abandoned building in Campbell was set to be torn down soon, but it looks like someone beat the city to it.

The 123 Gordon Street home went up in flames Thursday night. Crews from Campbell and Coitsville were called in to put out the fire. Firefighters said the roof and second floor of the building had already collapsed into the basement by the time they arrived on scene.

No one was inside, and there were no injuries.

Apparently the home and two others next to it are all on Campbell's demolition list and were supposed to be torn down in a few weeks.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Two hours later, another apparent arson was reported about two miles away at the intersection of Bennington and Atkinson on Youngstown's East Side. Newton Falls police officers and dispatchers will soon have a new tool to help them get to emergency situations even more quickly.

Starting April 1, the police department will have computerized dispatch and a records management system for officers. This program will allow the dispatcher to send information to the computers in the police officers' cruisers.

The information will include a map showing the officer exactly where the caller is located.

"By passing this in the car, it will allow the officer to find the location right away and then when phase two goes through, the officers will be able to tell where a cellular caller is standing," said Tom Cravens, of TAC Computers.

Police Chief John Kuivila said in addition to the mapping, the officers will also get prior history on the location, such as the nature of any previous calls.

The money to get the updated system was provided by a state grant.

A day after former Youngstown businessman J.J. Cafaro was thrown in jail, his attorney filed paperwork to get him out in time for the weekend.

After Cafaro pleaded guilty Wednesday to making a materially false statement, U.S. Federal Judge John Adams ordered him jailed without bond for failing to provide the court financial information needed to set one. While Cafaro's attorney, Ralph Cascarilla, argued attempts were made to cooperate, a member of the federal prosecution team had disputed the claim.

Cafaro was to be held at least until a detention hearing set for Monday morning.

Cascarilla on Thursday filed a motion to move the hearing to Friday, saying that the needed information has since been tendered. However, officials with the U.S. Attorney's office said as of late Thursday afternoon, there had been no decision made on the motion.

In the meantime, Cafaro, early Thursday, was moved from Summit County Jail to the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown.

His detention hearing is tentatively set for 11:30 a.m. Monday and his trial is set for June 8.

The charge against Cafaro stems from U.S. Attorney's Office's claims he broke federal election law in 2004. Investigators said he caused an official within his daughter's campaign committee to file with the FEC a quarterly report that falsely stated he contributed only $2,000 to her general election campaign when he actually gave $10,000.

The maximum individual contribution allowed by law to federal candidates is $2,000 for the general election and $2,000 for the primary election. Capri Cafaro has said she did not have knowledge that the action occurred and is not being charged.

The accusations are related to her failed 2004 bid for the 14th U.S. Congressional District when she ran against Steve LaTourette.

This is not the first criminal proceeding against J.J. Cafaro. In 2002, he pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge related to a bribe given to then-congressman James Traficant. He was sentenced to 15 months of probation. In that case, Cafaro admitted that he bribed Traficant to help a company in which Capri Cafaro was an executive.

Cafaro and his brother, Anthony, abruptly retired in December as executives of the Cafaro Company.
