Trumbull Deputies Face Discipline

Trumbull Sheriff Deputies Pete Pizzulo and Tony Leshnack started the Ohio Narcotics Officers Association, in 2004, to help educate the public and distribute information on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

But, now the non profit organization has led to problems for the two veteran officers.

"Basically it looks like possible improper fundraising," said Ernie Cook, chief of operations at the sheriff's department.

The human resource director for the sheriff's department is recommending that Pizzulo and Leshnack be fired.

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.  The two are facing numerous administrative charges.

"Violation of policy, procedures and failure to obey the law," Cook said.

No criminal charges have been filed.

The administrative charges and  a pending criminal investigation by the state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation has surprised everyone in the criminal justice system in the county.  Both deputies were well respected.

Pizzulo was known for brilliant investigative work and often testified in high profile murder cases.  Leshnack worked as courthouse security for years, and recently brought inmates to and from the county jail for court appearances.

Leshnack and Pizzulo are on sick leave. Their attorney Randy Weltman could not be reached Thursday.
