Walmart Deal Reached by Mandy Hackman

It appears the final hurdle has been cleared in the Liberty Walmart project.

Store officials have made a deal with the city of Youngstown over hiring policies.

Mandy Hackman explains how the deal benefits the store and the community.

Big plans for the Walmart Supercenter and the surrounding area now that both sides have reached an agreement...

"Now that we have that anchor, we know other things will follow, and Belmont will be revitalized to be the Belmont of old as we knew," Liberty Trustee Jack Simon said.

Not only will this new site bring in business to the area, but it will also create jobs for the people of Youngstown.

"The agreement calls for Walmart to recruit Youngstown city residents. They will have a hiring center in the city of Youngstown for their hiring period," Mayor Jay Williams said.

All accomplished by directly sitting down and hammering issues out.

"Instead of trying to negotiate this through the media with misinformation and public hysteria, as one elected official chose to do, we sat down with Walmart and worked out an agreement that's a benefit to the entire community," Williams said.

Plans are already in the works for the site. Walmart plans to widen Goldie Road to allow traffic to come in and out of the future parking lot.

The Liberty Walmart will also be the first all-green center in the area.

Just a few more ways it could attract others to the valley and support regional cooperation.

"What's good for Liberty is good for Youngstown. What's good for Youngstown is good for Liberty," Williams said.

"We're hoping everything will move forward quickly. We've had a lot of people waiting in the wings to see when Walmart would build," Simon said.

Construction could begin as early as next month.
