Stars For Casualties by Dennis Biviano

A Columbiana church is paying tribute to all the fallen solders from Afghanistan and Iraq. And thanks to the suggestion of two parish members at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, the project is taking on a whole new meaning.

What started off as a small display in front of the church.. has expanded five years later....all because of the idea of two parish members.

"WE FELT IT WAS NECESSARY TO RECOGNIZE EACH AND EVERY SERVICE MAN AND WOMAN WHO PAST AWAY FOR THE AFGHAN AND IRAQ WAR."-Carol Dawson Columbiana

"PASTOR DAVE WOULD PRAY FOR THEM EVERYDAY. AND I SEEN THE STARS AND I JUST FELT THEY SHOULD HAVE NAMES."-Ray Dawson Columbiana

With a little help from the parish staff and the Internet, the project became a reality. And earlier this week was put on display along the walls of the church....the names of four thousand one-hundred twenty four soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Pastor Dave Conrad says the entire church has offered nothing but support.

"WE HAVE A LOT OF PARISHIONERS AND FRIENDS FROM THE PARISH WHO ARE SERVING IN THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ AND WE WANT TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT FOR THEM. AND WE ALSO FEEL THE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT PEOPLE DON'T FORGET ABOUT THIS BECAUSE WE HEAR ABOUT THE WAR EVERYDAY AND AFTER AWHILE YOU CAN JUST BECOME NUMB TO IT AND WE DON'T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN."--Pastor Dave Conrad Jerusalem Lutheran Church

And the pastor says when the war is finished, they intend to take the stars down and bury them in the peace garden next to the church and erect a permanent monument dedicated to our fallen hero's.
