GM Chemical Spill by Mandy Hackman

Operations are back in full swing at GM Lordstown tonight just hours after one of the buildings was under a mandatory evacuation.

Day shift workers at the Paint Shop were forced to leave because of a hazardous materials spill.

Hazmat crews and firefighters rushed to the paint shop, after vibrations caused a pipe to rupture, spilling out about 200 gallons of paint thinner.

"When thinner is anywhere, there are fumes. And one spark could create havoc in the plant," UAW Local 1112 President Jim Graham said.

Luckily, this chemical spill did not spread.

"The rooms are designed to contain possible spills and it did its purpose. Now the hazmat team is in there containing the spill in the room," Graham said.

Still officials evacuated the entire building with about 150 workers inside.

"Safety is number one at "ordstown. We have a very strong record, our people are very proud of our record for safety, and we will maintain that," Graham said.

And officials say the relationship between the Village of Lordstown and GM is key so that chemical spills like Friday's are cleaned up as quick as possible.

"We have a great volunteer fire department who's trained for things just like this. We have the equipment to handle things if they come up so we can be the first responders out there,"Lordstown Mayor Michael Chaffee said.

And because of the quick response, officials got everyone out in time to avoid any injuries. There also weren't reports of any damage.

Production stopped for a few hours at the paint shop while the spill was cleaned up.

2nd shift workers returned once the area was declared safe.
