Cub Scout Camp

Cub Scouts from all over Northeast Ohio are making their way to Camp Stambaugh in Canfield Township.  Over the next three weekends, 365 scouts from six different counties will make their way to the Valley. But just what can they expect to learn at camp? Camp Stambaugh is going to be a busy place over the next several weekends. Cub Scouts from 6 different counties will make their way there for a host of different events.

Bud Bower, Camp Director;  "THERE GOING TO DO BB-GUN, ARCHERY, THEY'RE GOING TO DO INDIAN CRAFTS THEY'RE GOING TO DO NATURE, THEY'LL HAVE INDIAN LURE. DID I MENTION SWIMMING?"

One of the things the scout leaders stress is safety. It's a chance for kids to learn the correct way to handle a bow and arrow, or how to act around a gun.

Bud;  "SOMETIMES IT'S BEEN THE FIRST TIME THEY'VE SHOT A BOW AND ARROW, THE FIRST TIME THEY'VE GONE SWIMMING. THEY MAY BE DEATHLY AFRAID OF IT, OR THEY MAY BE DEATHLY AFRAID OF TRYING THIS. AND THE BB-GUNS ALSO. BUT AT LEAST THEY'RE FAMILIAR WITH IT. SO WHEN THEY COME UP AGAINST SOMETHING ON THE OUTSIDE, IF THEY SEE A GUN, THEY KNOW NOT TO JUST PICK IT UP AND HAVE AT IT. TO CONTACT SOMEBODY AND MAKE SURE THAT IT'S DONE RIGHT."

The kids also get a chance to put their own artistic touch on some scout gear, decorating everything from a necklace with their Indian name on it, to a walking stick.

"WHAT DID YOU MAKE HERE TODAY?"

Matthew Hunger, Cub Scout;  "A NECKLACE AND A VEST."

Mitchell Archibald, Cub Scout;   "THIS IS A WALKING STICK, AND THIS IS VEST, AND THIS IS A NECKLACE WITH MY INDIAN NAME ON IT AND THIS IS WHAT I PAINTED ON MY VEST."

Camp Stambaugh will serve more than 365 scouts over the next three weekends.
