Seniors Beat the Heat at Luau by Dan Martin

It's a perfect day for a luau.  Nearly 200 seniors from a handful of nursing homes and assisted living facilities met up in Boardman Park for a day of fun in the sun.

"We're playing bingo, and I guess we're going to have some good food, and a nice day.", says Dortha Medrick, a resident at Sunrise Assisted Living of Poland.

"They all love to come out, and they love a good picnic, and they like to keep busy.", says Jackie Jones, Sunrise Community Relations Director.

But as the temperature pushes into the mid-80's before noon, ground o-zone levels can become unhealthy for certain groups of people.

"Individuals that are very young, so that'd be children, the very elderly, and then individuals outside of those age groups that have underlying health problems that relate to the lungs, which would be asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.", says Dr. John Venglarcik, from the District Board of Health.

But even on a day like today when the air is so thick and hazy and hot and humid, these senior citizens are doing a better job than I am of beating the heat.

How are you guys keeping cool? "Eh, nice breeze...", says Bob Moherman of Austintown.

"Drink plenty of fluids, and stay in out of the sun.", adds Dortha Medrick.

"We're also providing lots of cool drinks for them to choose from, lots of ice...", says Karen McCallum, Recreation Director at Boardman Park.

"We bought them all cozies from Sunrise, just to keep their stuff nice and cold, and they do very, very well, as long as you keep them out of the direct sunlight.", says Jones.

So a little heat and humidity won't stop these seniors from dancing and having a good time.  Or keep Dortha away from her favorite part of the luau.

"Probably food!", Dortha laughs.

ALOHA! from Boardman Park.
