The pain at the pump is affecting travelers across the country..whether by car, air, or boat. In Lake Milton today we find out what effect high gas prices are having on valley boaters.
Fourth of July weekend, a perfect time for valley water sports enthusiasts to get their fix. But this summer, gas prices are one dollar and fifteen cents more a gallon than they were just one year ago. Some say, that's having an effect on how much people are getting out on the lake.
"IT'S DEFINITELY LOW, NONE OF THE PUBLIC RAMPS ARE FULL OF TRAILERS THEY USUALLY ARE.....LESS BOATS BOTH ENDS OF THE LAKE, AND UP THE RIVER THERE ARE USUALLY BOATS, BUT NOT THIS YEAR."--Craig Wiencek Boater
Lake Milton looked fairly quiet for a holiday weekend according to most of the people on the water. They say that the high gas prices are making them cut back on how many weekends they spend on the lake. However the business that supplies many of the boaters fuel, the Waters Edge Board Shop, says that sales overall, are just about where they were last summer.
"NO NOT REALLY, THIS YEAR HASN'T BEEN MUCH DIFFERENT THAN LAST YEAR. THE SAME PEOPLE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE THAT LIVE OUT HERE. THEY'RE DIE HARD BOATERS AND THEY'LL BE HERE NEXT YEAR EVEN IF GAS IS 9 DOLLARS."--Kristen Staffrey Waters Edge Board Shop
What has been different though is the type of watercraft many people are taking out. The use of Jet Ski's is falling because they burn through fuel much quicker than a boat.
"THE JET SKI'S RUN WIDE OPEN A LOT MORE THAN TO BOATS DO, SO THEY BURN UP A LOT MORE GAS."--Kristen Staffrey Waters Edge Board Shop

Nationwide, the high price of gas may be preventing people from buying new boats. Those sales are down about 50-percent from a year ago, that has the number one boat manufacturer in the world, Brunswick, suspending production at several plants.
