Campbell Drug Indictments

The Kirwan Homes Housing Development in Campbell has twice been the target of FBI investigations since 2000.  Officials hope the third time is the charm to help bring down the cities crime rate.

It's an area that has been nothing but a headache for the Campbell Police Department.

"Campbell for instance, they estimated 35 to 40 percent of their dispatched calls were to the Kirwan homes for crimes related to street robberies, shootings, domestic violence and murder. So we are looking at it not as a drug trafficking organization but as an organization involved in violent street crimes."------Mike Cizmar FBI.

As a result of the crime and drug problems the Campbell Police Chief asked the FBI for help. Thinking the criminal activity could be linked to a gang calling themselves the Soup City Boyz.   An investigation lasting 14 months was launched in late 2006.   After two investigations in four years the F-B-I was rather surprised to be asked to come back to the housing project.

"This one, we thought we had nipped everything in the bud.  But we were requested earlier than expected to go back in there and we had in fact never seen it at that level of violence before. With the amount of shootings and several murders, so it had gotten worse."------Mike Cizmar FBI.

One murder occurred as recent as February when 39 year old Diana Noble of Howland was shot after an apparent drug deal gone bad.

The investigation consisted of lengthy undercover work including controlled drug buys from the individuals and eventually led to the indictment of 18 people on count upon count of trafficking crack cocaine.  Four of those indicted are in custody while police are tracking down the others.
