Mayor Recommends Firm by Gerry Ricciutti

In recommending "SMG" over "Global Spectrum," the mayor told council that while both firms are well-respected, SMG is only in the business of operating arenas like the Chevrolet Centre.  They are handling more than two hundred right now, including venues in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Columbus.

The city's plans call for a five year contract with SMG, paying around eighty thousand dollars for the first twelve months, starting January first.  The company would work with a local operating team, led by interim manager Eric Ryan.  While the mayor urged council to study the seven page pamphlet he put together explaining his recommendation, he also urged the members to act soon, to take advantage of SMG's ability to bring popular attractions to the Centre.

Still some, like Carol Righetti expressed disappointment that council had not played a bigger role in reviewing the two companies competing for the job.  Stating that members now have too many unanswered questions, telling First News, "we are not going to jump into a decision."

Others, however seemed more concerned about being able to fully explain the selection process to their constituents.

While the mayor told council he'd like to see legislation at next Wednesday's meeting, at least some say they may not be ready that quickly.
