Boardman School Grant Combines Healthy Food With Science Lessons

With the cost of food constantly on the rise these days...its a challenge to fill your refrigerator at home...but imagine having to feed 400 kids.

And it's even more of a challenge to provide those kids with healthy snacks.

But Market Street Elementary in Boardman recently got a little help...the school is one of 51 across the country to receive a 10 thousand dollar grant sponsored by Hidden Valley Ranch.

The grant allows the school to bring in vegetables on a cart 3 days a week, next year.

And, since one of the requirements of the grant is to sustain the program even after the original money runs out,  the food service supervisor came up with the idea of building a green house.

The students will grow their own food and flowers to sell....then all the proceeds will go toward buying veggies for the week.

The greenhouse will be built on school grounds by the Spring of 2009, and the 4th grade science class will then oversee all that's growing insude.

The PTA will be involved in marketing & selling, and the children and the community will be working together, combining science lessons with real life lessons.
