Water Main Break by Dan Martin

The water main break happened at the corner of Mahoning Avenue and Lipkey Road sometime in the middle of the night.  But because the water flowed out the back, and down the hill, instead of spilling onto the street.  So, no one noticed or reported the break until early Friday morning.

"There's about a four foot crack in the pipe, that allowed it to drain the tower and caused the disruption of water for North Jackson.", says Joe DeNiro from the Sanitary Engineering Department.

Crews spent most of the day cutting and removing the damaged part of the pipe to replace it with a new one.  But the lack of water made things difficult for many shops, schools and businesses up and down Mahoning Avenue in Jackson Township.

"We've been carrying water from somewhere else here for drinking water, making coffee and washing dishes. It's just a problem, without water we can't run properly.", says Dom Raco, owner of Dino's Restaurant.

Dino's stayed open for the lunch crowd, but a few of Dom's other businesses weren't so lucky.

"We own the laundry mat and we just shut down because there's no sense in me paying the employees there without being able to do any business.", says Raco.

The water line break also shut things down at Jackson Milton Schools, students were sent home for the day, but sorry kids, your principal says classes should resume as normal Monday morning.  DeNiro says water should be back on at most homes and businesses by now.  But full service might not be restored until tomorrow evening.

***A boil alert has been issued for those affected by this water main break.  Residents should boil their drinking water for about three minutes, through four p.m. Saturday.***
