Walk To School Day

Students in Struthers got a breath of fresh air Wednesday morning on the way to school.

Struthers Middle schoolers decided to walk to classes today instead of having mom or dad drop them off as part of National Walk to School Day.

School officials say walking to school helps keep the student's minds fresh and clear while promoting exercise for a healthy lifestyle.

The walk is also to bring attention to a grant the district is trying to get from the Ohio Department of Transportation in order to improve the routes kids take walking to school.

Terry Stocker, Struthers Mayor says, "The travel plan is to build a plan that puts sidewalks in areas that doesn't have them. And we're looking at areas that's been identified now like Garfield street in Struthers that we feel will provide safer walking conditions."

If the district gets the grant, they could receive up to two hundred fifty thousand dollars to improve routes to school.

Cities such as Lowellville and Campbell have already received money in previous years.

The next round of funding is due in November.
