Biking to Work

The price of gas keeps climbing higher and higher, dangerously close to 4 dollars a gallon. But one Valley man is avoiding the pain at the pump.  That's right, he's hitting the road on his bike. And in honor of ride your bike to work week.  Justin Carney prepares for his early morning commute.  But its not your typical ride.  A few years ago, he put his car keys down, and picked up his bike.

Justin Carney, Bikes to Work;  "I RUN ERRANDS ON MY BIKE, I RIDE TO MY FRIENDS HOUSE AND I USE THE BIKE TRAIL IN AUSTINTOWN QUITE A BIT."

Justin's also part of the less than one percent of the population that pedals his way to work.  If he drove his car to the office, he'd cover just over 20 miles round trip, between his home in Austintown and business, which is on the north side of Youngstown.  On his bike, its a few more miles, but this method eliminates one very expensive element, gas.

"WELL MY COMMUTE CONSISTS OF ABOUT 24 MILES ANYWAY AND THAT'S ABOUT A GALLON PER COMMUTE SO I'M SAVING 4 OR 5 DOLLARS A DAY."

Though saving money isn't the only perk.

"ITS THE RIGHT THING TO DO IT KEEPS ME FIT.  ITS RIGHT BY THE ENVIRONMENT."

He tries to help the environment about 3 times a week, weaving his way through the area's morning rush hour, eventually making it to Mill Creek park, and then downtown.

"I GENERALLY TAKE MOSTLY SIDE ROADS, AVOID MAJOR ARTERIES.  IT'S A LITTLE SAFER THAT WAY."

It takes Justin about 45 minutes to an hour depending upon traffic to get to work here on Belmont Avenue, and he says its worth every minute.

"IT ALLOWS ME TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH MY FAMILY BECAUSE NORMALLY I'D BE DOING MY EXERCISE WHEN I GET HOME.  ITS GREAT, ESPECIALLY ON BEAUTIFUL DAYS LIKE TODAY."
