G.M. Plant Lay-offs

A possible plant shut down is looming for G-M Lordstown. In fact, Local workers could be off the job in less than two weeks, thanks to a strike in Michigan. The Detroit company, American Axle makes a part which is necessary for production to continue at Lordstown. That production may soon come to a halt.  Workers at G-M Lordstown could be off the job as early as April 7th.  That's because on Friday April 4th, they will run out of brake parts, essential to the Chevy Cobalt, making a plant shut-down inevitable.  These parts come from American Axle, who's workers are currently on the picket line.  They walked off the job about a month ago, and local U-A-W officials just found out about the possible shut down and layoffs last week.  Now, they're working to get everything in place in case they actually have to put the brakes on the assembly line.

"WE ARE IN CONTACT WITH THE UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE, THE STATE AND THE CORPORATION. UNEMPLOYMENT SUP...THAT'S WHAT WE'RE SHOOTING FOR AND I THINK WE'LL BE SUCCESSFUL."

The president of U-A-W local 1714, says they may be able to stay open an extra day or two...but a shut down at the fab plant will also follow.  And dealers will also feel the affects, since Lordstown only has about a 56 day supply of the Cobalt.  But for now we'll just have to wait and see how long the workers stay on the picket line in Michigan, to see what happens in Lordstown.
