The Downtown Youngstown Kiwanis organization hopes their latest fundraiser will offer another gift idea this holiday season.
The group is offering a decorative blanket to raise money and awareness about a problem many of us here in the United States have probably never even heard of: maternal and neonatal tetanus. It's the focus of Kiwanis International and UNICEF, who want to eliminate this killer disease by the year 2015.
"About 50,000 babies each year die around the world from tetanus in their mothers so this is one we thought 'why not do something?' The Kiwanis International supported it, so why don't we here in Youngstown do something about it?," said Kiwanis member Chris McCarty.
The blankets depict various landmarks in Mahoning County are available in three different colors and cost $50 each. Proceeds will benefit Kiwanis International's Eliminate Project.
"So many great places in the Mahoning Valley, we selected eight out of many to put on the throw. This is going to sell for $50 each with all the proceeds benefiting Kiwanis International's tetanus eradication efforts," McCarty said.
