"I think the whole thing is racist. I don't even understand why they would print this...", says a Slippery Rock University student after reading the comics.

A cartoon has caused quite a controversy on the campus of Slippery Rock University.  "The K Chronicles" comic strip ran in Friday's edition of the school's student-run newspaper, "The Rocket".

There's a drawing of a black man hanging from a noose saying, "You're doing this because I'm black, aren't you?" while white characters accuse him of playing the race card.

"It certainly ripped at the hearts and souls of many many people on this campus, not just members of our minority groups," says Rita Abent, Executive Director of Public Relations at Slippery Rock University.

The cartoon even led some students to show up to the Union with nooses around their own necks. Terrell Foster, an SRU student from Harrisburg says, "They put this in the paper thinking it would be funny. How funny is it when it's real? When you see someone walking around with a noose on their neck, it's not as funny no more."

The editor and academic advisor of "The Rocket" have no comment on the situation, telling us only that the cartoon is a nationally syndicated comic, something they've put in their pages for the past three years.

But that, and the fact that the cartoon's author, Keith Knight, is an African-American man apparently making a political satire comment on the state of race relations in America, does little to comfort students who say they've been hurt by recurring racism at Slippery Rock.

"We don't care if it was a black, white, orange, purple, pink person who wrote this article. They should not have been allowed to print it and publish it throughout the school. It's just wrong," says Audrey Foreback, a SRU sophomore from Warren.

Members of the campus NAACP chapter and Black Action Society have scheduled a meeting Monday night with "The Rocket" staff and a peaceful march and protest through campus Thursday afternoon.

Racism exists in the U.S. It won't go away by pretending it doesn't exist and by avoiding contact with possibly offensive people. It needs to be confronted and actively resisted. This comic is a wake up call for everyone to take a stand and do their part to make change happen or to perpetuate discrimination. Neutrality is not an option. I commend the editor for understanding the implications and choosing to publish it anyway.

P1088: Do you not understand that this comic is not attacking you, the minority? Do you realize that this comic is FOR you, the minority? Do you understand that this comic is AGAINST racism? Why is it that showing an act of racism automatically means that the comic is glorifying it? Why can't something be shown and say "This is wrong?" That's what this comic is doing. It's showing you all that is wrong. This is not an attack on the minority. This is an attack on racism.

I can respect Keith's right to freedom of speech/press, however I am a student of color @ SRU and I have experienced many different forms of racism here. Our issue is not the article itself out issue is the article being published in the Univeristy paper that we pay for ATTACKING US. You would have to understand the climate and unwelcoming atmosphere @ SRU to be able to understand why we are so offended. The editor of the paper mentioned that he just wanted to spark conversation but if he truely wanted to have a conversation all he had to do was ask. Josh (the editor) knew it would be offensive which is why he asked his father if it was appropriate or not the night before it was published. When in reality he should have gone to the advisor over the paper and asked his opinion. This is the last straw. Not only are students of color offended, people of all different races, religion and sexual orientation are offended! SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE!

Y'all comment about this article but the article is false. My previous comment explains it all.

In no way is Keith's comment in this cartoon racist. The protesting students need to beef up their education about how satire works and maybe consult a doictor about those jerking knees of theirs.

Here's the deal: If you truly understood what the comic is saying, any minority student would understand that this is an argument FOR the minority community and AGAINST the white community. The minority community ought to be showing this to everyone and saying, "Look, this is how we are treated by the white community! They know these things happen to us because of our race, but they're always getting silly and defensive about it, like we're crazy!" There ought to be a rally cry FOR this comic, because the comic is a rally cry FOR the minority. The white character in this comic is very obviously being lampooned, not the black character. And... does anyone understand the meaning of "sarcasm" and "satire" anymore?

All of you do not understand the climate of the area. This is not about political satire, it is about people in this paper who constantly attack the students of color on this campus every year. This article was not placed in the paper to bring up discussion. It was placed in there as an attack on the minorities on the SRU campus. It is not the article, but the history of the paper.
