Back in April 2009, we told you about cars severely damaged by pebbles, even bricks, being thrown from a highway pedestrian footbridge. That bridge has since been removed, but the problem apparently has not.
Elsie Ward was coming home from visiting her daughter at the hospital when she heard a loud noise on the roof of her car.
"At first I wasn't sure exactly what it was," said Ward. "I mean, it was a really loud boom, and then I thought, well, is something falling off the bridge? And when I saw the kid standing there, that's when it dawned on me that he threw a rock at my car."
Around 6 p.m. Monday, she drove under the North Belle Vista bridge over I-680 on the West Side when her car was struck. This is the same area where these incidents were reported back in 2009. Ward said the police are aware of the problem.
"They did say that there has been a group of kids that have been at that overpass and have been throwing rocks at cars," she said. "They haven't been able to catch any of them, and so they were glad that I reported it."
Ward is thankful that the damages done were minor but said it could have been worse.
"It could have broke my windshield," she said. "It could have caused a major accident. I could end up being in the emergency or hospital right now, and I hope they will be able to catch a couple of the kids that are doing this."
The police report said the individual responsible has brown hair, was wearing a bright orange shirt, and appeared to be in their teens. If you have any information, contact the Youngstown Police Department.
