Three people were arrested in Canfield Tuesday night, after allegedly lying about the events that led up to a shooting and tampering with evidence at the scene. Two of the suspects were in court Wednesday evening.
Around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Canfield police received a call claiming 18-year-old Sean Swegan had been hit by a bottle rocket.
Police said Jonla Dailey, 52, made the call, telling the dispatcher Swegan was taken to the St. Elizabeth urgent care facility in Austintown by her son, Shelton, 17, and his friend, Marc Hood, 18.
But while on hold, Dailey also was recorded saying this:
"OK, bud, try and straighten up the upstairs as much as you can in case the cops go up there. We're in big trouble."
A short time later, another voice is heard and Dailey replies, "get it hid."
This was actually the first story given to police. Investigators said the second was made in the emergency room.
"They advised that they were robbed in Youngstown," said Canfield Police Chief Charles Colucci. "Youngstown police did a good job and immediately determined that there was no robbery."
Police said Hood shot Swegan after jumping out of a closet with a gun loaded with a single bullet. Investigators said Hood had intended to scare the victim, but kept squeezing the trigger until the gun finally went off, with the bullet hitting Swegan in the torso.
While Hood is charged with felonious assault, both Daileys are accused of tampering with evidence.
"There's no reason to scare anybody with a firearm," said Colucci. "There's not any reason to be playing around with a firearm."
The victim is listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.
Hood and Jonla Dailey were in court on Wednesday. She was released on a personal recognizance bond. Hood is being held on a $20,000 bond.
