Owners of Kay Jewelers in St. Clair Twp. say store was broken into overnight

Police say the suspect somehow got on top of the roof, cut a hole in it, jumped through and dismantled the alarm system

ST. CLAIR TWP., Ohio (WYTV) - Two jewelry store owners were opening up their shop Sunday around noon when they realized it had been ransacked.

When the owners of a Kay Jewelers in St. Clair Township first walked into their store, they said they found a giant mess and several items missing.

"Material was off the counters, which is not the norm. Realized that everything had been ransacked," said Officer Scott Mick.

When police first got to the scene, they couldn't figure out how the suspect broke in. But as they walked throughout the store and into a back room, they discovered a hole in the ceiling.

Police say the suspect somehow got on top of the roof, cut a hole in it, jumped through and dismantled the alarm system.

"They do have alarms, they've got backup systems, battery packs, but once he made his way through the hole in the ceiling, he went straight for the alarm systems and pulling wires," Mick said.

Police, along with help from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, are hoping security footage can tell them more information, but they do know that the suspect was wearing a mask.

The owners are still working with police to determine how much jewelry was stolen.
