In order to completely replace your roof, it may be necessary to tear off the existing one. You may have re-roofed and have several layers of shingles and underlayment to remove. On a composite shingled roof, tear off is most easily accomplished with tools that cut nails and loosen shingles. Work may be started near the top of your roof in order to move the debris toward the edge for easier removal. To remove a built-up roof, seams may be used as a starting point for removal. Wooden shingles, tiles, and slate roofing may require hand removal using crowbars to loosen nails. If possible, nails may be removed to prevent them from rising up and affecting the new roof. Use of a container, or truck can simplify clean up and remove the debris. It's usually possible to load the truck directly from the roof. Depending on the season, consider removing only a section that can be roofed in a limited time. Keep tarps available to protect your exposed roof in the event of rain. Contact a roofing specialist for more information on tearing off a roof.
