Hearing rattles, clangs, rumbles, and dings emanating from beneath your automobile can be alarming. Often this is simply the result of a loose muffler fitting, clamp, or hanger. However, if engine sounds become too loud and increase when you accelerate, it could mean you need a new muffler. Your automobile's muffler was designed to re-route sound waves that come from the engine through the car's exhaust system. However mufflers do deteriorate, most often due to moisture accumulation. Some mufflers are assembled as a unit with the car's exhaust pipe attached. If you must replace the muffler, but the exhaust pipe is in good condition, ask your mechanic if there's an adapter that will allow the new muffler to be fitted to the old pipe. And remember to read your muffler guarantee carefully and keep it in a safe place.
