Dr. Shayesteh: Inflammation

Inflammation is one of the major contributing factors for our health

(WYTV) - Can we use a diet to stop inflammation in our body?  Actually, inflammation is one of the major contributing factors to our health.

Inflammation is the mother of every disease we have. Autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, asthma. So inflammation is actually the background for most of these chronic diseases. That's why controlling this inflammation is an extremely important element for better health.

What causes inflammation? One of the major contributing factors is belly fat. Belly fat actually produces a lot of inflammatory chemicals that cause damage to every aspect of our body from head to toe.

Another one is our diet. A diet that's high in fat and high in sugar is a significant contributor to inflammation.

The good news is that by changing nutrition, we can actually silence these inflammatory genes.
Changing nutrition is one of the critical things, along with weight loss, to shut down inflammation.

Diets that are high in omega 3 fatty acids, such as fish, are excellent. Also anything that has a color -- fresh fruits and vegetables are beautiful anti-inflammatory elements in our diet.

And don't forget the superfoods. Within two hours, they actually silence the inflammatory gene.

Remember, when it comes to your inflammation, food can be the medicine.
