PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — A Punxsutawney police officer has been fired nearly three months after a man died in a police cruiser about five hours after he was picked up for public drunkenness.

Mayor James Wherle (WIRL'-ee) says he can't comment on Brian Andrekovich's firing Wednesday night because the officer still has appeal rights.

The officer has not responded to requests for comment by The Associated Press since 48-year-old Stephen Obbish was found dead in his squad car on Aug. 15.

The state attorney general is investigating Obbish's death.

He was picked up for public drunkenness about 9:50 a.m. and was found dead in the same police cruiser. A coroner says Obbish died from a combination of his own medications and a blood-alcohol content nearly four times the legal limit.
