As world leaders debate on how the U.S. and other nations can reduce pollution, some here in the Valley are hoping a new partnership between Youngstown and a California-based consulting firm will help this area lead the way in ecofriendly development.

Mayor Jay Williams said while the collaboration isn't likely to create new jobs all by itself, he believes Global Green USA will be able to provide much needed contacts and other information for local firms looking to capitalize on the need for green technology.

The company's CEO said its job is not simply to serve as a hired consultant.

"We bring a lot more to the table as a partner, in trying to bring resources to the table," said CEO Matt Peterson.

Congressman Tim Ryan, D-Niles, is part of the congressional delegation going to the Climate Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. He told local reporters by phone Thursday that if Youngstown can take a lead in promoting itself as an ecofriendly community, the Valley may become more attractive to potential development, "so we start getting national and international investment, as opposed to having it taken out of our community."

The fee for Global Green's services will come, in part, from a $25,000 donation from a former Valley resident who has ties to the company. Williams said there are no tax dollars being used.

If the collaboration can do what officials expect, it could pay some huge dividends for the area's economic future, said officials.
