Jan Seidler has been a member of St. Paul's parish in New Middletown for about 15 years now.
"Father Shori was one who never put a hold on us," Seidler said. "He allowed us to worship the way we felt we should worship."
Yet, this is the first time he's seen a new priest lead the parish.
"It's always good for change, and I like change, and Father Popovich seems to be a breath of fresh air."
Father Stephen Popovich delivered his first mass at St. Paul's on Sunday. He takes the reigns from Father Nicholas Shori, who just became the head of the Youngstown Diocese's reorganization project.
After 15 years at Immaculate Heart of Mary's in Austintown, Father Popovich was moved to St. Paul's. It's an assignment he said will bring many new challenges.
"Just the leadership skills he possessed and the strong direction of his parish and his prayerful experiences," Father Popovich said.
Parishioners said Father Shori grew St. Paul's into more than a church. Father Popovich hopes to continue St. Paul's tradition of community leadership.
"Leading like you're leading, you know, the conductor of a symphony." Popovich said. "I'm just directing and everyone else is helping out and assisting in so many ways."
Church members have faith Father Popovich can help the church grow even more.
"He says he has big shoes to fill, but you know what? I think he can do it," Seidler said.
