The Warren Fire Department is replacing some of its outdated equipment.
It received a $332,000 FEMA grant with a $17,000 match from the city to buy a new pumper engine. The department's current vehicle is 22 years old, and is dispatched to more than half of the department's fire calls.
"When you get grants, it's over $300,000 that the city won't have to spend on equipment and it's like free money coming to the city except the matching grants. In the past, we got grants and it just helps us overall," said firefighter Marc Titus. "We knew the problems we've had the last few years as we continue to apply for the grants. The more money we can save the city, the better service we can provide them."
The pumper engine will be based out of Station No. 5 on Atlantic Street.
