A banquet Sunday officially announced seventeen teenagers from throughout the Valley who've been nominated to attend three prestigious United States military academies.
"They care about each other. They care about their community. They're just terrific," said U.S. Representative Tim Ryan (D- OH 17th District). "They have great parents and families and support systems, and these are the people that we want making the very big complex decisions that we have in our country to make."
Five of the students have been nominated for the Military Academy at West Point, another five for the U-S Air Force Academy and 7 are being nominated for the U-S Naval Academy.
The students who applied went through a lengthy process, and were interviewed by a panel of five individuals, who then gave their recommendations to Rep. Ryan. He chose to nominate 17 students from around the 17th District. "They're just excellent young people. The best and brightest that we have in our community."
Among them, 17-year old Sean Murphy, a senior at Poland Seminary High School. He's excited about his nomination to the United States Naval Academy, and he's eagerly waiting to see if he'll be accepted. "It's such a prestigious school and such an honor to be accepted to any of the academies," Murphy said. "It's just something I've always thought about doing, and it would be a dream come true."
The students will start finding out in January if they've been accepted.
