A Valley family was honored this weekend by YSU for their countless acts of philanthropy.

The Beeghly Family received the Friends of the University Award at a dinner Saturday night.  The annual award recognizes alumni, friends and donors who have made a significant impact on the university.

Two YSU buildings, Beeghly Hall and the Beeghly Health and Physical Education Center, are among the many college buildings across the country named after the family.

Among those buildings are:

Beeghly Hall (1973) at Mount Union College in Alliance.  The administration building is named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Leon A. Beeghly, who were major benefactors of Mount Union College during their lifetimes. The building houses the principal administrative offices of the College, the Admissions Office and campus services.

Beeghly Library, a circular building at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio.  Built in 1967, the circular shape of the three story, open stacks Beeghly Library makes it a distinct presence on Heidelberg's campus and in Tiffin.  The library was named to honor a gift from Leon A. Beeghly, an alumnus.

The Ohio Wesleyan University Libraries in Delaware, Ohio is among the best of the state's liberal arts college libraries.  The Leon A. Beeghly Library, completed in 1966, houses a central collection of more than 480,000 items, including rare books, manuscripts, art, microfilm, and federal government publications.  The Ohio Wesleyan University Beeghly Library has been a federal depository for government publications since 1845, and is one of the oldest continuous federal depository libraries in the United States.  The Federal Depository Library Program, distributes millions of U.S. government publications to libraries across the countries.

Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA is home to the Beeghly Theater where the students put on a variety of plays and productions.

The Beeghly Building at American University in Washinton D.C. houses the university's chemistry programs.

Educational institutions have been the primary beneficiaries of the L.A. Beeghly Fund, established in 1940 and carried on by Thornton and his brothers after their father’s death in 1967.  Thornton Beeghly passed away in October of 2008, leaving his legacy to his son, Bruce, and daughter, Carol.
