V&M Star is looking seriously at the possibility of expanding it's facility here on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The company has applied to the Environmental Protection Agency for permits, to expand it's Youngstown area plant.  The EPA approved one permit in July.  V&M also applied for a second permit in October.  That permit is still being reviewed by the state EPA.

A company spokesman released this statement Tuesday afternoon.  He said the company is in the process of evaluating a site in Girard and Youngstown for a possible expansion of it's melt shop and rolling mill operations.

The spokesman stressed that the company has not made a final decision on the expansion or the location of the expanded facility.

Sources say if the expansion project does go forward it will mean hundreds of jobs for the area.

Girard Mayor Jim Melfi and Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams says they could not firm the project.  But Melfi did say any business willing to expand in the area would certainly be welcome.

"Any jobs coming to our area would be very exciting in these tough economic times and it would afford people opportunities to raise their families," Melfi said.

Sources tell us that officials in both Youngstown and Girard have worked together to bring this project to the area.  It is not known if any formal agreement has been worked out.
