Another step has been taken in the effort to get V&M Star Steel to bring a nearly one billion dollar expansion project to the Valley. The Youngstown Board of Control voted on an agreement with Girard over land and taxes.
The Board of Control approved the same agreement that Girard City Council accepted Monday night. All that has to be done now is for the deal to be signed. That will happen Wednesday morning at 10 A.M. at a ceremony at the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber office in Youngstown.
This agreement finalizes about two hundred acres of land being annexed into Youngstown from Girard. It also puts into writing just how much tax money each city will get if V&M decides on the valley for this project.
Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams says this is a prime example of two communities working together to bring in new business and jobs. "Where two communities are sharing revenue on what up to this point has been non-productive contaminated brown field. That hopefully in the next several months, weeks, and next few years will be a highly valuable productive site that employs hundreds of people from the Mahoning Valley."
This agreement opens up the door for work to begin on cleaning up the site. That is going to happen regardless of What V and M decides. The Mayor says work should begin in the next 7 to 14 days.
