A Trumbull County Corrections Officer has been fired after allegations were made that he may have had sexual contact with a female inmate.
George Palmer, who has worked for the sheriff's office for about 8 months was fired Tuesday.
Sheriff Tom Altiere said the allegations stem from an incident that allegedly happened early Saturday morning.
The State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation has been asked to look into the matter. As soon as he heard the allegations, an internal investigation, which included looking at video surveillance of the jail, was started.
"There were a lot of rumors so we did a lot of work," said Sheriff Tom Altiere. "We looked in our cameras and found out there was a possibility of this occurring and that's why we are having BCI come in and go over everything and investigate it."
Altiere says BCI is expected to confer with the Trumbull County prosecutor's office to determine if any criminal charges should be filed.
The sheriff adds that cameras were installed to help protect inmates and employees.
The sheriff says he does not know how long the investigation will take.
