You may have seen the TV shows featuring "Ghost Hunters," people looking for paranormal activity. A former nursing home in New Castle is becoming a hot spot for it. Some think the 84-year-old building is haunted. You be the judge.
Gary Cangey, Paranormal Investigator, tells us some of the history of the building. "It was built in 1925 as the Lawrence County Poor Farm. At that time, it served to house the counties homeless and indigents, and things of that nature. Then in 1977, a skilled wing was added, and they turned it into a nursing facility and changed the name to Hill View Manor."
Hill View Manor closed in 2005. Most of the rooms are empty except for some old equipment...or are they? Did everyone leave when the doors were shut?
Candy Braniff, Paranormal Investigator, doesn't think so. "We've had everything from audible voices that you hear with your ears, EVPs, full body aberrations, things being moved, hearing footsteps coming from down a hall, and no one being there."
Candy Braniff and Gary Cangey have acquired quite a few stories in the two years they've been looking into activity at Hill View.
Candy shares one of those stories. "We had a psychic here one time, and she picked up on a spirit that was here. Through talking with former employees, we had described what the psychic had seen this woman to be, and we had verified that the woman's name was Mary. She liked shiny things."
While our cameras were there, Candy and Gary attempted to talk to Mary. They tell us sometimes the spirits will respond, and you can't hear it being said, but it will record. Here is what we heard. "We're going to bring some friends in here later to say hello to you, and visit you, and talk to you. Would that be okay with you?" What we heard next sounded like a muffled, "Yes."
Is Hill View haunted? Well, we'll let you be the judge.
But both Gary and Candy are convinced.
