Senator George Voinovich says he's been working to defeat statewide gambling measures since the late 1980's -- when he was the Mayor of Cleveland.  Now, twenty years later, he says there's a lot not to like about Issue-3, and the people looking to build casinos if it passes.  He claims developers "are really taking us to the cleaners, they really are," adding, "this is a sweetheart deal for those individuals."

Voinovich stopped in Austintown this afternoon, part of a swing through northeast Ohio -- encouraging people, like the clergy members meeting at the Highway Tabernacle Church, to oppose Issue-3 -- and to spread the word to their congregations.

While supporters of Issue-3 tell me they don't agree with the Senator, they understand his position.  Spokesman Bob Tenenbaum says "we respect his position -- he's simply against gambling in the state."

But Tenenbaum does take issue with some of things Voinovich and others say about Issue-3 -- claiming they're using information from groups like "Truth-PAC" that have been shown to be inaccurate.  He says "people read these things and they don't bother to check the facts on their own."

Tenenbaum encourages voters to read the Issue-3 amendment language for themselves to see just what isnd is not contained in it.

Interestingly enough,  opponents also say voters should review the language -- so they can see for themselves what's wrong with it.
