Congressman Tim Ryan announced Friday he sent a letter to Severstal management emphasizing how important the Warren operation is to the city and its schools and offering his assistance with any efforts to restart the mill.
Ryan reiterated that Severstal is one of the largest employers in the state's 17th District and contributes about $1 million annually to the school district's budget and $600,000 in income and corporate taxes to the city.
It also generates about $2 million from water and sewer fees at Severstal, Ryan said in his letter.
"I hope you will look at your overall operations to determine if your Warren facility would not be able to better serve the needs of your customers and protect your overall market share," Ryan said in the letter. He said if there were any issues impacting their ability to restart the Warren plant, to contact him.
The company began last year cutting back the plant's operations due to the economy. The company idled the staff, including 200 workers, earlier this year.
