American Red Cross offices around the valley are using a national story to show people the importance of having CPR training.

The staff at the Trumbull Mercer County Red Cross office in Sharpsville, Pa., includes just a few of the Red Cross employees who will be tuning in to ABC's Extreme Makeover Home Edition Sunday (Nov. 1), when they feature a family that is celebrating life, instead of grieving, after a wife saved her husband's life with CPR.

In the story, the wife used chest compressions to save her husband's life, but she was an EMT trained by the Red Cross on how to perform CPR. So now the Red Cross would like to use this opportunity to educate the public on how to properly perform chest compressions.

When someone sees another person in trouble, it's important they know what to do, said Red Cross officials, and they should start chest compressions only after following basic steps without training.

Officials say you must make sure the person is not breathing first or they could possibly do more serious damage. The Red Cross does not offer chest compression classes, but can share information on how to perform them.

The Red Cross is hoping that everyone will tune in at 8pm on Sunday for Extreme Makeover and will use this story to see the importance of being prepared in case of an emergency.
