As Youngstown police scoured the neighborhood around St. Dominic's Church, reaction to the murder of Angeline Fimognari over the weekend ranged from shock to anger.
Councilwoman Janet Tarpley, whose 6th Ward includes the church neighborhood, said Fimognari's murder was unnecessary. Mayor Jay Williams called the suspect "depraved" and "a coward."
Hoping to lure clues, city leaders announced Monday they're joining with the Greater Youngstown Crimestoppers organization to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Police believe the motive for Saturday's shooting was a robbery. Since Fimognari was found, all available detectives, as well as members from the area's various violent crime task force units, have been scrambling to find any evidence they can. That includes images from surveillance cameras in the neighborhood.
In the meantime, authorities remain convinced there are people in the community who know what happened.
"Don't assume that any tidbit of information is too small," said city Prosecutor Jay Macejko. "Don't assume that we know what you know."
Although no one from either St. Dominic's or the Diocese of Youngstown has spoken publicly about Saturday's murder, Bishop George Murry Monday issued a written statement on behalf of the area's Catholic community.
While he called the incident horrific and shocking, he said the community must come together to both solve the crime and help those in need so they won't turn to violence in their lives.
Murry said St. Dominic's is taking steps to ensure the parish is safe for those who worship there. Murry said he and Pastor Gregory Maturi encourage parishioners to continue attending Saint Dominic's.
Murry also said he will celebrate Wednesday's 8 a.m. mass -- which Angeline Fimognari usually attended -- to be with her family and friends and pray for her together.
