The state's top Democrats gathered in the Mahoning Valley Thursday night. And with so many of the power players in town, it was a perfect opportunity for Delphi hourly and salaried workers to make a stand.
They wanted to make sure this region's elected leaders know how much they're losing, having their pensions dramatically reduced. Governor Ted Strickland responded to the workers saying, "Our responsibility is to keep this alive in front of decision makers, to make sure you're treated fairly." One Delphi employee in attendance appreciated the governor's remarks saying, "We want to put a face on this problem, that's what we're doing. Thank you very much."
Congressmen Tim Ryan and John Boccieri have co-sponsored a bill to use TARP money for help with the problem and Governor Strickland called that the best solution to the problem.
The main purpose of Thursday night's Democratic gathering was to raise money for the 2010 campaigns. The Democratic party promised change during the last campaign, but some top leaders feel many Americans are more nervous than ever. "We're trying to take on the major things hurting the country and correct them, and it's difficult, it's a big lift. But we're working hard on it," says Ohio Congressman Charlie Wilson.
"The two biggest issues are health care and energy. We want to get it right. We see so many people who can't even afford to go see their doctor and that's unfortunate in a country as wealthy as ours," added Ohio Congressman John Boccieri.
Change leads to opportunity and these leaders hope they'll still be part of the solution down the road.
