The Ohio Department of Corrections announced Friday it has chosen a new method to execute death row inmates. The state will switch from a three-drug injection to a single injection into a vein. The new method will also have a back-up of a muscle injection.
Ohio's old method came under fire after a death row inmate walked away from an unsuccessful execution attempt.
The new method has never been used on U.S. inmates before, and local attorney Dave Betras said that means it will likely be challenged in court.
"Anytime you are the first person to do something or try something, the courts will get involved," said Betras. "I can assure you that this will be tested in the federal courts as to whether this is a cruel and unusual way to put someone to death."
The state plans to have the new procedure in place by Nov. 30.
